Big Returns in Uncertain Times

All we hear about these days is how badly the economy is doing: war and massacres and that the environment is pretty much past the point of no return. In times like these, is there anything you can count on for a return?

When you look outside yourself, you can spend a lot of time worrying about all sorts of things over which you have no control. You can watch your investments lose money, flip to any channel to see horrific violence or just ask someone reading the paper to quote you something dismal.

It’s all a question of focus. Life goes on. You may as well live today. (We are so fortunate here to know with some degree of certainty that this day won’t be our last!) So why not invest your time, energy and money in things that make your present moment, (that’s right, today, right now), more enjoyable?

No, I don’t mean go out and buy something else you don’t need that contributes to the existence of all the hardship, misery and poverty in other parts of the world. I don’t mean get or do something that will keep you distracted for a while longer so you can pretend that everything is OK. I mean turn your focus inward and find the peace, joy and wealth inside yourself.

Sound a bit crazy? Crazy is worrying so much about how things will be tomorrow that you make yourself sick. You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Don’t waste today stressing over it. Crazy is regretting your actions of yesterday. What you should have done is already past and you can’t change it. At least when you look inside yourself, you can find something and someone you know.

So invest. Spend your time doing things that grow the person you are. Do things that strengthen and enrich your body. Spend money learning things that build you as a person. Invest in your body, mind and soul. You can count on a return every time.

Take a course for personal growth rather
than professional development. Learn how to meditate or develop a regular practice. Go to a yoga class. (You can’t listen to your Ipod or watch TV there.) Take the time to make yourself a meal from scratch. Just be with your Self!

Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) helps you to increase the depth at which you can be with yourself. Entrainments help you to notice the wealth of resources and resourcefulness that you have within you. NSA care increases your ability to be present in your body, decreasing stress and tension and promoting healing. This investment in yourself pays you back by making you more present and focused in your day to day life. You enjoy life more, make the appropriate choices and accomplish the things that make a difference.

When the outside world looks like there is no hope in sight, look to the inside world for peace and harmony. Unlike the outside resources, your inner resources are sustainable. When you invest in developing these resources, you change yourself and the world changes around you. Now that is a big return in uncertain times!

Dr. Paul Newton is trained as a chiropractor. He now practices Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) exclusively. NSA is a discipline that uses gentle contacts along the spine to create higher brain awareness of the tension that builds in your body due to stresses in your life. A Network session helps you connect to this tension and release it. Dr. Newton holds workshops each month on the topics covered in this article. Please check the workshop schedule and call 613-594-9595 to reserve a spot at the next workshop.
